China is Angry as Arunachal Mountain is named After Dalai Lama
Arunachal Pradesh's unnamed peak was successfully climbed by a mountaineering team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), which is part of the Indian Ministry of Defence, on September 25, 2024. After that, the 20,942-foot summit was given the name "Tsangyang Gyatso Peak" in honor of Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama, a Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh native and a highly respected figure in Tibetan Buddhism.

why the Naming Matters?
.Cultural and Historical Significance:
Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama, was born in the Arunachal Pradesh region of Tawang. His services to the Monpa tribe, a local nomadic group, and his poetic legacy will live on. The choice to christen the peak by the Indian government is considered as an homage to the contributions made by this Tibetan leader to Buddhism and the indigenous way of life.

.Recognition for Mountaineering Excellence:
Given the difficult terrain, the climb of the summit by NIMAS is a noteworthy accomplishment. By overcoming ice walls, crevasses, and glacier conditions, the mountaineers accomplished their ascent and established Arunachal Pradesh as a potential adventure sports destination.
.China’s Response
China’s Territorial Claims:
China reacted angrily, calling the naming of the peak "illegal" and "null and void." Beijing refers to Arunachal Pradesh as Zangnan and considers it part of its territory. The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated its claim that any Indian actions in this region are unlawful under international law.
Historical Context:
China’s objections are rooted in its broader territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh, which it has labeled "South Tibet" since 2017. Beijing's renaming of several places in the region has been a strategy to reinforce its sovereignty claims. This latest development, however, highlights India’s firm stance that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of its territory, and Chinese claims cannot alter the reality.

India’s Position
Reaffirmation of Sovereignty:
India's Ministry of Defence emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh is a key part of India, and naming the peak after the 6th Dalai Lama is in recognition of his contributions to the region. The Indian government dismissed China’s objections, reiterating that territorial renaming by China holds no legitimacy over Indian territory.Geopolitical Implications:
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions between India and China over the boundary disputes in the eastern sector of the Himalayas. It aligns with India’s long-standing diplomatic position on maintaining its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh and counters China’s increasing geopolitical ambitions in South Asia. Conclusion: Symbolism and Diplomatic Tensions
The naming of Tsangyang Gyatso Peak is more than a mountaineering achievement; it serves as a cultural and symbolic assertion of Indian sovereignty in a geopolitically sensitive region. While China has protested the act as an unlawful claim over disputed land, India’s decision reflects its broader strategy of solidifying its presence and historical ties to Arunachal Pradesh. As both nations continue to assert their claims, this incident could further strain bilateral relations.
