The Real Story of DUNKI Movie : Based on True Story

  DUNKI  is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film based on the eponymous illegal immigration technique. The film is directed and edited by Rajkumar Hirani from a screenplay he wrote with Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon. Produced under the banners of Red Chillies Entertainment, Jio Studios and Rajkumar Hirani Films, the film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal (billed as a special appearance), and Boman Irani.

DUNKI COMES FROM :

DUNKI MEANS DONKEY:The term Donkey Flight (termed as "dunki" in Punjabi) originated from the Punjabi idiom which means 'to hop from place to place. ' This method of entering borders illegally has gained popularity among migrants, particularly those hailing from Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, and even Gujarat.

PEOPLE  STARTED DOING DUNKI 

In a first, the United States is seeing an influx of illegal migrants from countries other than Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Ecuador,

According to data compiled by US Customs and Border Protection, around 42,000 migrants from India have crossed the southern border illegally between October 2022 to September 2023. Since November 2022, around 97,000 Indians have tried to enter the US illegally and arrested by the American authorities.

In Haryana, youngsters have stopped dreaming of joining the Army or becoming a doctor. Like people from Punjab and Gujarat, they are becoming real-life 'Dunki', taking the illegal and dangerous 'donkey route' for a life abroad.

The real journey to his destination began in Ecuador. Jitendra and his group traversed through forests, rivers and on seas. They remained hungry for days on end. And once survived on just biscuits for an entire week. Along the way, thugs robbed them of their money, phones and even their clothes and shoes. They had to trek in the cold and snow barefoot.

MOST CASES FOUNDS IN INDIA LIKE:

Apart from the crossing on the Mexico border, an additional 1,600 Indians crossed from the northern border- four times the amount of the past three years combined. Meanwhile, the total number of migrant encounters increased from 2.38 million in 2022 to 2.48 million this fiscal year, marking a first in history.

Since 2007, the total number of illegal border crossings by Indians in a fiscal year has exceeded 5,000 only four times. However, all the illegal migrants turn themselves into Border Patrol, who then process them as asylum-seekers.


The data from the US Customs and Border Protection also said around 1.49 lakh Indians were caught trying to unlawfully enter the US between February 2019 and March 2023. The highest number of those detained were from Gujarat and Punjab.

Many of these illegal immigrants, mostly from Gujarat, cross the border through Canada, where they have either established themselves or are waiting for an opportunity to cross the border to enter the US.
